I AM JOE'S FEAR OF DISEASE:
RIGHT INTERIOR
While he was painting this image, the World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists on 9/11/01, less than a mile from Coleman’s Brooklyn home. The images, constantly being replayed on television, came to look to the artist like erupting tumors. The ambulance that took Coleman to the hospital. Blood fluke.
Coleman in the hospital, with Whitney camped out beside him.
Jews being burned for “causing” the plague in the Middle Ages.
Coleman’s tonsils, which were removed when he was a child. His earliest hospital memory. Jimmy Microbe meeting the corpuscle police.
Huber the Tuber digging into the lung, making his home there.
