THE GALLERY OF JOE
HASIL ADKINS: THE LONE ONE

An hommage to Coleman's favorite shockabilly musician, who died in April, 2005.

A WORK IN PROGRESS

Snapshots of The Mad Hatter, 2000, photographed over a period of five months showing Coleman's unique method of working.

THE MAN OF SORROWS

The Man of Sorrows (1993) is a limited-edition artists' book about Joe Coleman's extraordinary painting of the same name - a portrait of the life of Jesus Christ as told from the idiosyncratic vision of the artist. In this online version, you can explore the first few chapters of the The Man of Sorrows. It is of course impossible to reproduce the book, a facsimile illuminated manuscript in Joe's own handwriting with tipped-in illustrations. You'll just have to order it from us.

FAITH

Faith (1996) is a self-portrait concerned with mortality, fear and rage. It contains much authobiographical detail, and is thus a good intorduction to the artist's life.

COAL MAN

Coal Man (1997) is a brutal and revealing self-portrait created at a time when the artist was in a profound despair. By surrounding himself by the things that both comfort and torture him, Coleman attempts to preserve his sense of self and and protect himself from harm.

I AM JOE'S FEAR OF DISEASE

I Am Joe's Fear of Disease (2001) is a response to the anxieties produced by the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and the artists' own mysterious recurrent ailments during this period. A delightful catalogue of human misery.
